Spring Fest 2015 welcomed Alice Wetterland, Jade Cata-Preta, and Nicole Byer from MTV’s GirlCode on Friday, March 20, at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. The three comedians presented students with obscene jokes that kept the crowd laughing from beginning to end.

The theater was filled with a handful of students—all of which were thoroughly entertained by jokes pertaining to issues of sex, race and typical everyday life, relevant to the student body.

Before the show, Wetterland and Cata-Preta agreed to speak with The Chronicle. Byer did not reach campus until the show was about start, and was unable to grant an interview due to time constraints.

Wetterland is from Minneapolis and moved to New York when she was 18 where she studied art. After graduation, Wetterland’s career was at a standstill for five years. After remaking her life, she began doing standup comedy. Wetterland currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Cata-Preta is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. At 13 she moved to Virginia. She attended Emerson College in Boston, MA, to pursue musical theater. She wanted to be in Broadway but her theater dreams were short-lived after being told on many occasions her voice was not desirable. After moving to Los Angeles, she accepted an internship at different casting offices. After hosting National Lampoon, her career branched off into stand-up comedy, which was not the career choice Cata-Preta had in mind originally.

At the show, Wetterland and Cata-Preta gave words of inspiration to students who plan to venture into professional television, specifically MTV.

“They definitely have a wide scope in terms of what they look for in talent. They want to be discovering people,” explained Wetterland.

“They want somebody that doesn’t have their s*!# figured out, but somebody that has their own kind of drive,” said Cata-Preta.

The show started around 7:00 p.m. The three comics gave individual performances, followed by a Q&A session after the show.
Shawnee State was happy to welcome the young comics to campus, and hope they will return in the future.
