Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” laser show fills planetarium

Did you know that there is a Planetarium located right here on Shawnee State University’s campus? Many students are unaware that Shawnee has one and have not gone to check it out.

Clark Planetarium is located inside the Advanced Technology Center. It is a large room holding 66 seats underneath a 10 meter domed projection screen. This projection screen is able

to project a realistic view of the nighttime sky, videos and animations. The digital projection system operates from a single fisheye lens for 360×180 degrees of 3-D experience.

Last week, the planetarium featured several laser light shows available to students and the public. Using music, LaserVinyl, presented light shows dedicated to the best of classic rock.

Electrolaze, Skrillex, Daft Punk and “the mother of all laser-light shows and cult favorite,” Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” were shown to the public inside the Planetarium.

Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” is a concept rock opera album that takes the listener on a journey, rather than a collection of songs placed together. The song’s laser light show experience was full of imaginative images and hypnotic light effects that captivated the overall story. It voices the journey through Pink’s tragic life experiences; the loss of his father, ridicule from school- teachers, his overprotective mother and the breakdown of his marriage causing him to build bricks in the wall leading to self-isolation. Many of the laser imagery dis- played is similar to the album artwork of “The Wall” and is an experience all Pink Floyd fanatics should see. Clin- ton Sexton, a senior at Shawnee and the presenter of the laser light show, explained he chose the specific shows because “Pink Floyd is a classic college favorite [and] almost every college dorm room has a Pink Floyd poster on its walls.”

The laser light show is just one of the many shows that are offered at the Planetarium. In the past they have held movie and game nights. The Planetarium also hosts free public shows Monday and Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
